Statue of Liberty Threatened Closed

Washington (ANTARA News) - The Statue of Liberty probably can no longer be visited with others, common fate with the Grand Canyon and many other U.S. national parks if the budget problems unresolved.

Closing it would affect Web sites operated by the National Park Service including popular attractions in the West such as Yellowstone and Alcatraz.

"We hope there is no closure by the government. If there are, we will close all 394 of our national park sites, "said National Parf Service spokesman David Barna, quoted by AFP.

Agency not only operates the park, but historic sites, including the Statue of Liberty in New York harbor and the former Alcatraz prison in San Francisco Bay.

Sights were visited by an average of 800,000 visitors per day this year.

Jila they closed, a security officer at a place that will drive out the people, and in parks where people live in tents or hotel, "we'll ask them to leave," said Barna.

In one case the closure of the site, the National Park Service will retain only about 2,000 of 17,000 employees to protect those sites. 15,000 subcontracted workers at risk as well as hotel employees could not stop the approved budget.

Barna said the economic losses from the closure of the site will total 32 million per day.

Given the White House and Congress to stop the budget, the backup plan has been made to cover government agencies that are not important.

This could affect the fate of 800,000 government employees and sites like the museums under the Smithsonian Institution, including the National Zoo. (*)
