Legal services not on Reid’s priority list

As we watch to see if the government will shut down at the end of the week, one thing to keep in mind is that legal services funding is on the chopping block. That’s one of the items defined as “discretionary spending.” According to the National Law Journal, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has identified Planned Parenthood and NPR, not legal services, as entities he’s interested in protecting. The House has approved a $70 million mid-year cut to the Legal Services Corporation, out of a $420 million budget-about a 17 percent decrease. The Senate nixed it, so far, but it could come back as the compromise budget slouches toward its Friday goal.
