We wanted to let you know about an exciting new opportunity for Pittsburgh artists to work at The MacDowell Colony, one of the nation’s leading artist residency programs. The Heinz Endowments has established two Fellowships to underwrite all costs of MacDowell residencies of up to two months. Heinz Endowments Fellowships are open artists of all disciplines who reside in Pittsburgh or the surrounding 10-county area (Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Washington, and Westmoreland).
This is a transformative opportunity for artists both emerging and established. At MacDowell, artists receive exclusive use of a private studio building, three meals a day, living accommodations, and the benefits of working in an inspiring multidisciplinary community of fellow artists from across the country. The Heinz Endowment Fellowships will be offered starting in the Winter-Spring residency period at MacDowell. Artists applying for Summer 2011 residencies (deadline January 15, 2011) will be considered for the fellowships.
The Arts Council is hosting a free information session at our offices on Thursday, November 18 from 5 – 7 pm. Cheryl Young, MacDowell’s executive director, will lead a discussion about the Colony’s free residency opportunities. Visual artist Kim Beck and poet CM Burroughs will speak about applying, a typical day at the Colony and the impact of the residency experience on their professional development as artists. Mitch Swain, the Arts Council’s CEO, will moderate. Interested artists should apply using MacDowell’s standard application, which can be accessed at www.macdowellcolony.org\apply. Only those artists who are accepted for residency will be considered for the fellowships.
