Myanmar’s tireless pro-democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi, who has spent much of the past 21 years under house arrest, but today the Myanmar government has released her. In September on the Britannica Blog, I looked at the lessons of her life in a Picture of the Day piece.
Unbowed by the years hidden away from her supporters, she remarked today “There is a time to be quiet and a time to talk. People must work in unison. Only then can we achieve our goal.”
How long she will remain free and what impact she might have on moving her country toward democracy is unknow, but for today the world can celebrate the freedom of one of humanity’s most courageous women.
